Let us be honest about what we are doing here. This is not a spa day. This is peace for parents in the middle of it: the carpool line, the homework hour, the kitchen at 9 p.m. with tomorrow’s lunch still to pack.
When your brain feels like a browser with 47 tabs open, you do not need a wellness retreat. You need three things you can actually do on a school night.
Breathe like you mean it
Try this one in the carpool line, or anywhere you are stuck for two minutes. Inhale for a count of four, hold for another four, then exhale for four. Repeat until your shoulders start to unclench. God designed your body to respond to deep, intentional breaths. It is like a built-in reset button. Two minutes, nobody notices, and the chaos gets a little quieter.
Guard your input as a household rule
Your mental space is not the only one at stake. In our house, guarding input is a family rule, not a solo project. Not every headline or notification deserves your attention, and your kids are watching which ones get it. Set boundaries with technology and take breaks when you need them. Curate what comes in, because what comes in shapes what goes on.
Embrace a moment of stillness after bedtime
Once the kids are down, resist the urge to fill the silence with the phone. Five minutes of stillness, prayer, or just sitting quietly, can recenter everything. These moments remind you that it is okay to step away from the whirlwind. Trust in God’s plan, and take comfort in His presence during the storm.
Peace in a chaotic life is a challenge, but it is not impossible. Three quick practices, three places they already fit in your day. Take that deep breath, guard your input, and let yourself be still. You deserve it.
