Family Apps
Every app here earned its spot by solving one real family problem. Free where free exists, and honest about what the paywall hides.

YouVersion Bible App
This is the Bible app most churches already use, and there’s a reason for that. It carries thousands of Bible versions in over 2,000 languages, audio Bibles, and thousands of reading plans and devotionals, with plenty aimed at families and teens. You can download a translation for offline reading, highlight and bookmark verses, and run a plan together with your kids so everyone reads the same passage each day. Registration is optional. It’s free with no ads and no in-app purchases, funded by donations. For parents of school-age kids and teens, the Verse of the Day and kid-friendly plans give you something concrete to talk about at dinner instead of “how was your quiet time.”
One honest caveat: it’s a big app with a lot going on, and it can feel like a menu with no map at first. Pick one plan and the Verse of the Day and ignore the rest for a month. It’s rated Teen in the app stores, so if your kids are on the younger end of school-age, you’ll want to set it up with them.
Why we picked it: The standard, genuinely free Bible app every family can start with, no cost barrier, no excuse.

Bark
Bark is a parental-control and monitoring app for families with kids on phones, tablets, and computers. The Premium plan scans texts, email, social media, web searches, and saved photos, then flags things like cyberbullying, depression, self-harm, explicit content, and predatory contact. Instead of handing you every message your kid sends, it alerts you when something looks off and gives guidance on how to handle the conversation. You also get screen-time schedules, website and app blocking, and GPS location tracking. One plan covers unlimited devices and kids, which matters if you’re not buying a license per child. Bark Jr. ($5/month or $49/year) covers basic screen time and filtering for younger kids who aren’t on social media yet. Premium is the one for teens.
One honest caveat: on iPhones, Apple’s privacy rules keep third-party apps from reading the device directly. To get real monitoring on an iPhone or iPad you need the Bark Sync, another $6/month, a gadget that scans the phone when it’s plugged in. Factor that in before you sign up, and tell your teen it’s there. Them finding it on their own does more damage than the monitoring itself.
Why we picked it: The best fit for teens, alerts without reading every text, unlimited devices, and the price is flat for the whole family.

Echo Prayer
Echo Prayer is a prayer-list app: you write down prayer requests, set reminders through the day, and mark requests answered so you can look back at them later. The free version works fine for one person keeping a private list. The ECHO+ upgrade unlocks the parts a family would actually use together: prayer groups, a shared prayer feed everyone can follow, stats and streaks, and desktop access. If you want the family praying through the same requests during the week, the shared feed is the useful feature. It’s on iOS and Android.
One honest caveat: the group sharing, the feature that makes this a family app, sits behind the paywall. The free download is a private list; if you want the whole family to see and pray over the same requests, you pay $15 a year. That’s cheap, but the free version doesn’t do what the family pitch promises, so go in knowing which one you need.
Why we picked it: The simplest shared prayer tool for a family, a feed beats a group text thread for keeping prayer requests alive past Sunday.
Price: Free for the base app; ECHO+ $15/year. 7-day free trial on ECHO+. Visit official site
